Braving the Shelter

Sunday 11 July 2010 at 1:59 pm

The shelter in my town, like many others in the country, is at rabbit capacity.  Rabbits have been surrendered lately in higher numbers.  Easter was a few months ago, and the novelty of the Easter gift has worn off.  People are moving, kids are getting ready for college, and no one wants to take care of the family rabbit.  Good Samaritans are bringing in rabbits that they found in their yards and neighborhoods that others have set free, mistakenly thinking that this is less cruel than taking them to the shelter.  Animal shelters can be scary places for rabbits, with new sights and sounds, dogs barking, and strangers coming to look at them.  It is scary for many people, too.  Some people are afraid to go there and volunteer, saying that they “just can’t stand it”.  Maybe they think their hearts are too tender, or they can’t make a difference, or they will end up bringing all the rabbits home.  The bottom-line though, is that those rabbits need you.  They need someone who speaks rabbit.  They need someone who understands what their diet should be and who knows that they need to exercise.  They need someone to talk to the visitors and explain that a three-year-old should not be the primary rabbit caregiver.  There are lots of ways to help.  Maybe you could bring some toys or fresh bunny veggies.  Maybe you have a morning or evening to play with the bunnies.  Maybe you can make handouts for the shelter to give to rabbit adopters.  You are needed.  Even if you think you can’t do it, give it a try.  You might surprise yourself.

Over 100 rabbits rescued from backyard breeder in Martinez

Monday 28 June 2010 at 10:41 am

A local rabbit rescuer named Michelle came across a neighborhood garage sale in Martinez where rabbits were being sold--in the backyard of the house was over 100 rabbits, living in miserable conditions and rapidly multiplying. Volunteers sprung into action and rescued all of these rabbits, many of whom are small babies. Suzi Hibbard, who rescues for the Martinez shelter, has taken it upon herself to foster the entire batch of bunnies. Rabbit Haven, Harvest Home and House Rabbit Society are all assisting with donations and spay/neuter services.

Carrots! Carrots! Carrots!

Tuesday 22 June 2010 at 09:04 am

Carrot tops are a delicacy at our house.  They rank very high in the list of favorite bunny greens.  I am one of those people you see in the store carefully examining all the carrot bunches looking for the best tops.  You know the ones I mean, the fresh green ones with the highest possible top to carrot ratio.  The end result is that, at any time, I have about 10lbs of topless carrots in my crisper drawer.  So here comes the real dilemma – what to do with all those carrots?  I asked this question recently of my fellow bunny slaves and got some good ideas.  One person takes carrot dishes to all her church potlucks.  I confess I have done this too, and luckily my family is fond of carrot cake.  Another person gave me a recipe for carrot fritters that I just might try out.  In my continuing search for ideas, here is my current favorite carrot-containing recipe.  If you have a great idea for the endless supply of carrots, let us know!  Maybe then we can all reclaim our crisper drawers.

Acupuncture for Rabbits

Monday 07 June 2010 at 07:11 am

The benefits of acupuncture are among the numerous things I have learned from my rabbit.  Our rabbit has head tilt.  Before she became tilted, I had no idea that veterinary acupuncture existed.  When our vet became a certified veterinary acupuncturist, our bunny was one of the first clients to receive treatment.  I confess now that I was a little skeptical at first, but not anymore!  Acupuncture treatments helped her learn to cope with being tilted, and have helped her overall well-being.  Now that she is elderly and has arthritis, the acupuncture treatments help with that, too.  To learn more about the benefits of acupuncture for rabbits, check out these links.

A Rabbit's Garden

Sunday 23 May 2010 at 09:20 am

Summer is coming and my bunny herb garden is well on it's way!  This year we have thyme, basil, dill, parsley, sage, and chamomile, all of which are much loved by our rabbit.  The herbs require little effort from me, and save us a bundle over the little bunches at the grocery store.  If you want to try herb gardening, check out this plant list.

Spay/Neuter at Long Beach City College

Sunday 18 April 2010 at 1:20 pm
The phrase ‘it takes a village’ took on new meaning at Long Beach City College this week, as the long-awaited trap/neuter/return (TNR) plan for campus rabbits began in a big way. Read about how Best Friends, Bunny Bunch, HRS educator Deb Widolf, and Long Beach City College staff and volunteers helped to stop the overpopulation problem at the college here: http://network.bestfriends.org/golocal/losangeles/14791/news.aspx

My rabbits are welcoming spring!

Saturday 17 April 2010 at 09:34 am

The grass has not started to turn green yet, here in the north where I am, but I can't wait!

I love 'harvesting' for my rabbits all the treats that grow in my yard.

My bun Neigey is still very new to being outside on my bunny-proofed patio for play time but

his eyes no longer seem like they are going to pop out of his head, LOL.

Bruno needs your help

Saturday 20 June 2009 at 06:43 am

Bruno was rescued last summer from San Bruno mountain. He had been living up there for three months. While on the mountain he was bitten by ticks and developed masses on his neck. These wart like masses are caused by ticks giving him the Papillomas virus. Several of the masses were removed at the time he was neutered. One of the large masses return a few months later and was removed.

University of Victoria newsletter is horrifying

Friday 13 March 2009 at 09:43 am

A description in a University of Victoria newsletter of how to kill, clean and cook the rabbits running wild on campus has animal rights groups hopping mad.

The article -- Cook up a pot of Rabbit Restoration Stew -- appeared in Essence, a newsletter put out by environmental studies students.

"Kill a nice fat UVic rabbit," wrote Abe Lloyd, a graduate student, who said he eats about one university bunny a month.
