Adopt-a-Highway in Yosemite

The Southern Yosemite Chapter of HRS has been participating in California's "Adopt-a-Highway" little cleanup program for the past several years. It is the chapter's responsibility to keep a two-mile stretch of highway clean and litter free. Jan Davidson, our Southern Yosemite Chapter Manager writes …

"… HRS got volunteer of the year, 2002, for the entire district. Also commendation from Keep California Beautiful as well as an article in the Los Angeles Times Travel section.

We were originally situated at 4 corners and had the good fortune to get the site in Fish Camp (where we live) two years ago. This is two miles from the southern entrance to Yosemite National Park. Hence, exposure to literally millions of national as well as international tourists each year. At the base of each sign we've planted beautiful pink and white flowering quinces that bloom every spring in memory of my departed buns - as well as some other HRS friends buns. It's quite lovely.

During Easter season Don and I wear rabbit ears while doing our cleaning work - one set of straight ears, one set of lop ears. Don is my one and only primo volunteer and ongoing helper.
