Update: May 26, 2004 District Attorney to Review Case in June All rabbits remaining at Hayward Animals Services will be transferred into HRS's care by Friday, May 27. All of the affected rabbits need veterinary care, from tumor and abscess removal, to treatment of infections, to spays and neuters. Donations for their medical care are urgently needed! If you can, please make a donation, it would be greatly appreciated. Please send a check to: HRS, 148 Broadway, Richmond, CA 94804. Attn: Hayward Rescue Fund, or click on Hayward Rabbit Donations and tell them your donation is to go to "Hayward Rabbit Rescue." The Alameda County District Attorney's office
is scheduled to receive the rabbit cruelty case in June. Cruelty
to animals is a serious offense and punishable by law.
Based on the statements of witnesses, rabbit health records, and photographic
documentation, the rabbits were clearly being abused.
Check back here soon for updates regarding prosecution of this case. Update: July 6, 2004 Hayward Animal Control Animal Cruelty ReportThe Hayward Animal Control has not yet
finalized the report that they will be presenting to the Alameda County District Attorney.
Although the report can technically be filed up to one year after the incident, it is our expectation that the
report will be submitted to the District Attorney in the very near future. Once the report is submitted to the District Attorney, we will be asking each and every one of you to write a letter to the District Attorneys office on behalf of the Hayward rescued rabbits, strongly encouraging them to prosecute this case to the full extent of the law. It will be extremely important to demonstrate to the DA's office that many people are watching this case and want to see every measure taken to prevent the people who owned the Hayward rabbits from ever again being permitted to keep a single rabbit. Please..... check this site regularly for the announcement that "Your letters to the District Attorney are needed now!"
