Hayward Rabbits Need Your Help!

The Hayward Rabbits are adapting well to their new foster home in San Leandro CA. They are learning to trust their foster mom, and the volunteers who help clean, medicate, groom and feed them.
Surprisingly, most of the rabbits are in generally good condition. Several of them have eye infections, abscesses and minor wounds. Some of the rabbits have serious medical conditions that will require surgeries and long-term care. Almost all of the females are pregnant. By next Tuesday (June 8), all of the Hayward rescued rabbits will be neutered and spayed.

All of the Hayward rabbits are extremely dirty. Their fur is matted and urine-stained warranting numerous intensive grooming sessions for every rabbit. Like many rabbits, the Hayward bunnies are fearful when picked up, but once settled, they respond beautifully to gentle human touch. Prior to May 12, these bunnies knew no tenderness.

While taking care of these bunnies is a labor of love, it is also a tremendous amount of work, seven days a week.

If you live in the Bay Area, you can:

Spend some time with the bunnies. If you live in the Bay Area, please volunteer a few hours a week to groom and socialize them.  Help clean their indoor & outdoor pens, change litter boxes and wash their dishes. No matter what your rabbit skill level is, there is something you can do to help these bunnies hands-on.

Donate hay, litter and kibble. The Hayward bunnies require huge amounts of supplies. We need hay by the bale and large bags of organic litter. They eat ten pounds of kibble every day! Donations can be delivered to House Rabbit Society Headquarters in Richmond at 148 Broadway. Please be certain to tell the shelter workers that your donated supplies are for the Hayward Rescued Rabbits.

Donate toys. Rabbits need the mental stimulation that bunny friendly toys provide. Toys can be purchased at the House Rabbit Society’s “Hop Shop”, located at 148 Broadway in Richmond. Major pet supply stores such as Pet Food Express carry toys made specifically for bunnies. Bunnies also love pinecones, dried apple tree branches, toilet paper tubes and sturdy cardboard boxes.

Donate produce. The Hayward bunnies anxiously await their daily greens and fruit (apples, bananas, pears). Offer to produce shop and deliver to the foster home in San Leandro. You will be rewarded ten-fold, seeing these once severely deprived rabbits eating a nutritious meal. Or, donate Safeway gift certificates (purchase at your local Safeway) and mail to:

The Hayward Rabbits

Donate Transportation/Shopping Services.  Just delivering the necessary supplies to the foster home in San Leandro is a job unto itself. Shopping for produce is needed every two days. Hay and litter need to be delivered from House Rabbit Society in Richmond. Occasionally, we need someone to run to Home Depot for cardboard tubes, rugs and misc. supplies. If you and your vehicle are occasionally available, please let us know.
